REVEALED: SHORTLIST OF YORKSHIRE’S MOST ENTREPRENEURIAL FOOD BUSINESSES

The second annual Garbutt + Elliott Food Awards have now closed for entrants and a shortlist of 28 businesses across the eight categories have been announced.

The awards, established by leading York and Leeds based accountancy firm, Garbutt + Elliott, now in their second year, celebrate Yorkshire’s growing position within the national and even international food and drink marketplace. The awards received around 100 entrants and will see the winning businesses crowned at a ceremony on March 7, at the historical Victorian street of Kirkgate, in York’s Castle Museum.

With a very strong client base and commitment to the food and drink sector, Garbutt + Elliott are celebrating the industry and encouraging small and large producers, manufacturers and retailers to showcase their successes, within a supportive and collaborative awards scheme. The awards were set up in recognition of entrepreneurs and businesses from across Yorkshire who have been part of creating the county’s great food industry and cover all areas of the business.

Commenting on the shortlist, Garbutt + Elliott Partner, Tony Farmer, said: “There are many food and drink entrepreneurs who have great products or services, but to really thrive they need defined business strategies and the ability to work within them.  We are looking for entrepreneurs who have this business spirit within them and who can demonstrate business acumen, even when it isn’t their personal strength. Our shortlist reflects this, with people and companies who have been able to navigate their way in an extremely competitive sector.”

The final shortlist was compiled by a team from Garbutt + Elliott, together with the judging panel which consisted of sponsors Deliciouslyorkshire,  SIAFS, Made in Yorkshire and local food experts from York on a Fork, Make It York , Lemon Zest PR and Yorkshire chef extraordinaire Steph Moon.

Marketing Manager, Peta Bean, says: “It was an incredibly hard decision-making process only made easier by having to sample the delicious product for the ‘Deliciouslyorkshire’ Taste Award! We took a significant amount of time to discuss the finer details of all the applications and to seek out those who had that extra something to differentiate them. We are now excited to choose the overall winners, including the overall Business of the Year.”

Garbutt + Elliott advise entrepreneurial food and drink businesses across the county and see daily how forward-thinking and innovative these businesses are. The UK’s best towns for foodies and top 100 Restaurants are revealed today in Harden’s Best UK Restaurants 2019. Harden’s 28th annual poll surveyed 8,000 diners who contributed 50,000 reviews, which, as analysed and curated by the editors, form the basis for Harden’s inclusions, ratings and reviews. This year saw a surge in interest in the York dining scene, whose dining culture has been transformed in recent times with the arrival of a slew of ambitious modern openings.

Amongst the UK’s main restaurant cities York entered the top-20 list in terms of its number of top-scoring destinations, ranking at 8th=: on a par with more established foodie destinations such as Bath; and ahead of big cities such as Leeds, Oxford and Newcastle. With Le Cochon Aveugle (at 91), it also has a representative amongst the Harden’s 100: the country’s culinary crême de la crême.

The guide’s editor and co-founder Peter Harden said:

“During Harden’s 28 years of reviewing, York has hitherto been one of those charming British cities with inspiring medieval architecture, but, by contrast, a middle-of-the-road selection of pubs, tea-shops and bistros. But in the last year or two, the city has shot to prominence as a foodie-magnet, with an assortment of Shoreditch-worthy arrivals in recent times such as Arras, Le Cochon Aveugle, Skosh and the yet-to-be-rated Roots.”

Of the Harden’s 100 Best UK Restaurants, the No. 1 slot went to the Sanchez-Inglesias family’s Casamia in Bristol (up from No. 2 last year). With tickets to eat in the restaurant sold four months in advance, the Harden’s review applauds “an attention to detail you don’t see in other fine dining restaurants” but notes that “it’s the theatre and introduction by the chefs that really rounds off the experience”.

North of the border, Edinburgh (with 51 listings), is still unrivalled outside London in terms of quality, with 13 restaurants amongst the guide’s top scorers. Of these, four are in the Harden’s 100: Restaurant Martin Wishart (at 18), Castle Terrace (at 53), Number One (at 71) and Kitchin(at 95).

Scotland put in a strong performance accounting for 7 entries on the top-100 list. Outside of those Edinburgh restaurants noted above, Scotland’s representatives in the Harden’s 100 were Andrew Fairlie in Auchterarder(at 55), The Peat Inn Cupar (at 58) and The Torridon Restaurant in Annat (at 94). Glasgow again put in a strong showing as the 5= city outside London in terms of top scorers and 6= in terms of the total number of entries.

Wales achieved a respectable 3 rankings in the top-100 list, with The Walnut Tree at Llandewi Skirrid (at 34), Gareth Ward at Ynshir in Eglwys Fach (at 44), and Tyddyn Llan in Llandrillo (at 47). Cardiff maintained its position in the top-20 in terms of total number of entries (at 20=).

The newest big name on the food scene in Leeds is Assembly Underground Leeds, an appealingly subterranean food hall that features (predictably enough) great street food and a huge range of beers to choose from. The space that it inhabits, I’m reliably informed, used to house a nightclub and has been artfully distressed into a comfortable space that uses its corners to be deceptively spacious, fitting in a good number of food vendors.

On the drink front, the headline number is 50… there are 50 beer lines available to give a pretty startling choice of beers. It’s perhaps even a little overwhelming if you’re not committed to your beer knowledge; one assumes that the staff sampling sessions are suitably prolonged affairs.

On the food side, Bread & Butter serve up rotisserie style Brazlian “churrasqueira” and high quality meats cooked on skewers for super indulgent sandwiches. The Falafel Guys have earned themselves a great reputation over the last few years, serving up street food treats from their bright red van on Briggate, and now have a home more suited to the British weather thanks to Assembly Underground. On the preview evening I attended, there was sadly no pizza to be had from Pizza Authority but I was in the company of a very good pizza chef who assured me that the set up was up to the task of cranking out good pizza. Coffee duty is taken care of by Underground Coffee, but I was more interested in the colder drinks available so grabbed a cold beer before sampling some of the food.

I managed to hit Slap & Pickle and Jah Jyot for a couple of plates before my appetite gave out, first taking in a juicy, indulgent cheese and bacon burger. Slap & Pickle claim to serve the best burgers in Leeds. While that’s not the kind of absolute statement I’m given to making, I’m totally happy to say that this was a superb mess of enjoyment to work through. I can’t wait to check out their speciality loaded fries. The chicken Amritsar curry I had from Jah Jyot was a decent blend of spice and subtlety. In retrospect I wished I’d had enough space to fit in a masala dosa or one of the platters they were serving up but the chicken curry was perfectly enjoyable, though didn’t provoke the same praise from the group as the Slap & Pickle burger.

I’ll be back to Assembly Underground Leeds to check out the rest of the traders when I can but it’s safe to say that this is a great space with good food and drink options that’s bound to find its own niche in the Leeds food scene. I’ll look forward to a return visit.
